Committees

  • Pakistan National Assembly

    Intermediate · English
(PNA) as a committee exists as part of the formal UN structure replicated in MUNS. However, it operates according to the procedures, rules, and regulations of the original institution of the national assembly. National Assembly forms the lower of the Parliament - the upper house being the Senate. Any member of the National Assembly can put forth legislation however it needs the approval of two thirds of the majority of assembly in order to get passed. This would mean that at times, member of a party presenting a legislation will have to go beyond their party and intensively lobby with members of the opposite party to gain their support in presenting the legislation in a bipartisan manner. This is one way that diplomacy of delegates is crucial in the National Assembly as much as it is in any UN committee It comprises of a total number of 342 seats (with each seat representing a constituency) out of which 272 are directly elected - voted in by the masses on 5 years interval on the basis of first- past-the poll system. The other 70 seats are indirectly elected or reserved seats - with 60 being for women and 10 reserved for non-Muslim minorities. Each party gets allocated one reserved seat for every 4 seats that it wins in the General Elections. The key task of all representatives (directly or indirectly elected) is to legislate and formulate policies that address the concerns of the people of the country, at large, and those from their constituency.
