Dear Delegates, Faculty Advisors, and fellow members of the MUN community,

On behalf of our Executive Team and the Secretariat, it is my great pleasure to invite you to the 6th edition of Gimnazija Bežigrad Model United Nations Conference. Following a successful conference in January, we are excited to once again host national and international delegates from all over the world.

GimBMUN VI is a three-day simulation of the organs of the United Nations and is aimed at bringing the world of diplomacy closer to high school students (ages 14-19) with the goal of giving them a chance to participate in the world of diplomacy, broadening their horizons and empowering them to publicly express their thoughts.

There are many globally important topics in need of attention and it was a challenge for us to choose one as the topic of our Conference. After a lengthy discussion, we have decided to center this year’s Conference around a topic that is significant, is strongly impacting our lives, and will play an important role in shaping the future of our global society. The financial crisis is a recurring theme in the world of economics and politics and it impacts all parts of our lives. During the three days you will tackle several economic problems in your respective committees, while representing your countries interests and following its policies. Additionally, some of you will also be posed with a challenge of working under pressure and solving an urgent crisis. While finding solutions and drafting resolutions will pose a challenge, I strongly believe that by thinking innovatively and proactively, you will manage to come up with creative solutions and successfully reach a consensus in every committee.

Furthermore, while the academic component of the conference is crucial, a large and memorable part of attending MUN conferences is the opportunity to meet new people and build new friendships. While you will spend most of your time with delegates from your committee, you will also have an opportunity to meet others at events such as the Official Party, organized specifically for the attendees and the organizers of the conference, or the Diplomats’ Soiree. Throughout the three days, you will have an incredible chance to meet like-minded youth from all over Europe and build memories that will last you a lifetime.

All of the information about the Conference and important materials, such as the Study Guides will be available on this website, however, I would like to kindly invite you to follow us on Instagram, where we will post regular updates and reminders about the deadlines, social events, and any other important information.

I look forward to meeting all of you in January.

Sincerely,

Polina Kaspranova

Secretary-General

Ensuring international cooperation and security amidst the growing war industry in the Far and Middle East

    About the committee

The Security Council of the United Nations is a crucial organ responsible for maintaining international peace and security. Composed of 15 member states, including five permanent members (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States), it aims to prevent conflicts and resolve disputes through diplomatic means. The Security Council has the authority to impose sanctions, establish peacekeeping missions, and authorize the use of force when necessary. Its decisions are binding on all UN member states. At this year's GimBMUN, the Security Council will discuss the emerging issue of ensuring international cooperation and security amidst the growing war industry. Despite the tragedy of warfare, there have always been states, which profited greatly off wars and weapon sales. With recent years causing many to suspect the new polarization of the world, wars and its industry will continue to grow and threaten peace and diplomatic ties that have previously taken decades to establish. The Security Council will hold discussions from many angles, with an emphasis on minimizing the drawbacks brought on by the growing war industry. The discussion will cover a variety of issues, such as the spread of modern weapons, restrictions on the arms trade, and the effect on global peace and stability. Delegates will also investigate the socioeconomic effects of the growing war industry, emphasizing the necessity for sustainable growth and the distribution of resources to nonviolent causes. This involves promoting discourse and diplomacy as alternatives to military expansion, encouraging economic diversity, and spending on infrastructure and education.

    About the committee

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) was established by the UN Charter in 1945, as one of the six leading organs of the United Nations. The primary aim of ECOSOC has always remained promoting sustainable development, providing guidance, and ensuring strong cooperation and coordination between member states. Placing an emphasis on encouraging agreement and consensus on policies and actions to be taken, ECOSOC is able to address any and all economic, social and environmental concerns and ensure the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. At this conference, the ECOSOC council will be entertaining two topics; ‘addressing income inequality and promoting economic growth through sustainable development’ and ‘addressing the long-term consequences of changed trade routes due to the economic crisis of 22/23’. Both of these agendas are interconnected with the economic crisis of 22/23 that is the highlighted topic of the entire conference, however they each require different, yet equally challenging analytical and awareness skills from the delegates. The topic of income inequality has been a persistent issue all over the world, and while certain policies and solutions have been introduced and presented, progress is yet to be made. The second agenda on the other hand, is an exceptionally new topic that calls on the delegates to be resourceful in finding useful information, and truly embody the policies of their countries in order to reach conclusions that might become reality in the near future. By engaging in these types of debates and discussions, MUN delegates can develop a deeper understanding of the complex issues in our modern economies and societies and can hopefully work together to develop innovative solutions that promote global economic growth, prosperity, equality, and social justice for all.

    About the committee

The HRC in MUN (Model United Nations) is a simulated United Nations body that allows students to learn about the workings of the UN and international diplomacy. The Human Rights Council which is an international organization, tasked with increasing the promotion and protection of human rights throughout the world, as well as with identifying instances of human rights breaches and offering recommendations on them. At this conference, the topic for the Human Rights Council is the correlation between the production of drugs and poverty rates in South America. Poverty and drug production are highly depended on one another as high poverty leads to drugs and other illegal ways to make money and likewise drug production and trafficking contribute to poverty. The correlation between the production of drugs and poverty rates in South America is a critical issue so delegates can debate and discuss policies and programs that can help to address it. For example, they may consider ways to promote economic development and job creation in regions that are affected by drug production, or they may discuss strategies to reduce the demand for drugs through education and prevention programs. By engaging in these types of debates and discussions, MUN delegates can develop a deeper understanding of the complex issues facing South America as well as the world, and they can hopefully work together to develop innovative solutions that promote human rights and social justice for all.

    About the committee

NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a political and military alliance formed in 1949. It consists of 31 member countries, primarily from North America and Europe. NATO's primary purpose is to safeguard the freedom and security of its member states through collective defense. The cornerstone of NATO is Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which states that an attack on one member shall be considered an attack on all and requires a collective response. NATO operates on the basis of shared values such as democracy, individual liberty, and the rule of law. The alliance promotes political dialogue, cooperation, and consultation among its members. It provides a platform for member states to address security challenges collectively and to develop joint strategies and capabilities. At this edition of GimBMUN, delegate will be able to experience debating in this alliance and given that NATO plays a significant role in analyzing and assessing the impacts of increased military expenditure, this committee will be quite a challenge for delegates to tackle. The alliance recognizes that defense spending can have economic implications for member countries. Within NATO, member states regularly share information on defense budgets and military capabilities. This information exchange allows for a comprehensive assessment of defense investments and their economic consequences. NATO's framework provides a platform for member states to discuss the economic effects of increased military expenditure, such as the impact on national budgets, industrial development, job creation, and technological innovation, which is what the delegates will be doing at our conference.

    2. Consequences of the shifting balance of power in the Asian Pacific

    About the committee

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), established in 1967, is a regional organization consisting of ten member countries. ASEAN aims to foster regional peace, stability, and economic cooperation among its member states. Over the years, it has significantly influenced the Southeast Asian region by addressing various challenges. Acknowledging the fact that economic stability is vital for the sustainable development and wellbeing of all nations makes it almost impossible to ignore the effects of economic insecurities in Southeast Asia. These insecurities, characterized by factors such as income inequality, unemployment, and financial volatility, can have devastating consequences such as social unrest and hindered progress towards poverty reduction and are particularly notable in Southeast Asia. Countries that have witnessed significant changes in the geopolitical landscape of the region, particularly due to the shift in dynamics caused by emerging powers in the Asia Pacific, recognize the impact these changes have on ASEAN members and the wider region. While these shifts in power offer new opportunities for economic cooperation and development, they also present challenges in terms of security concerns and potential competition among major powers. ASEAN, playing a crucial role in managing these consequences, prioritizes dialogue, regional cooperation and the principle of multilateralism. As such, it offers a platform for Southeast Asian nations to address their insecurities and instabilities, and as a consequence debating in ASEAN will allow the delegates to try and reach consensus most certainly help preserve collaboration and stability in the future as well.
