    About the committee

SOCHUM – Special Committee on Human Rights and Digital Sovereignty The Special Committee on Human Rights (SOCHUM) at IIMUN 2026 will focus on the emerging global challenges of digital sovereignty and algorithmic governance. Delegates will explore how digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and data-driven decision-making impact individual rights, privacy, and national sovereignty in an increasingly interconnected world. Agenda Topic: “Digital Sovereignty and the Rights Shaped by Algorithms” Committee Overview: In an era where algorithms influence everything from social interactions to access to essential services, nations and international organizations are grappling with the balance between technological innovation, human rights, and state authority. SOCHUM provides a platform for delegates to debate and propose frameworks that protect individual freedoms, ensure transparency, and promote accountability in digital governance. Delegates will engage with questions such as: How can states maintain digital sovereignty while respecting international norms and human rights? What ethical frameworks should govern algorithmic decision-making in public and private sectors? How can international cooperation address cross-border data flows and protect citizens’ rights online? What policies can ensure that AI and automated systems do not perpetuate discrimination or inequality? Learning Objectives: By participating in SOCHUM, delegates will: Develop a nuanced understanding of digital sovereignty, AI governance, and human rights law. Hone research, negotiation, and diplomatic communication skills through debate and resolution drafting. Learn to analyze policy frameworks and propose actionable solutions to complex global issues. Gain insight into the intersection of technology, governance, and international law. Outcome: Delegates will produce draft resolutions and policy recommendations addressing digital governance challenges, emphasizing both national interests and international human rights obligations.
