PREVENTING THE RISE OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING DURING THE AFGHAN CRISIS

    About the committee

TOPIC N°2 : PREVENTING THE RISE OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING DURING THE AFGHAN CRISIS Committee: The UNHRC (United Nations Human Rights Council) Protecting human beings to be physically and psychologically abused, disregarding their human dignity. Presentation of the topic: Trafficking in human beings represents an average annual turnover of several billion dollars worldwide, 32 billion dollars. It is one of the most profit-making activities of organized crime. Terry Coonan said, “Human trafficking is a multi-billion dollar growth industry because, unlike drugs, which are gone as soon as they are used, humans can be recycled. Because they can continue to be exploited, they’re a better investment for traffickers”. Human trafficking has two meanings in French : traite d’êtres humains and trafic d’êtres humains, which translation would be closer to human smuggling. They should not be confused. Through the exploitation of victims, the suppression of their autonomy and freedom, this crime violates human rights. Human beings are then considered as nothing more than commodities. Human beings are physically and psychologically abused, disregarding their human dignity. Trafficking in human beings often occurs in situations of conflict. Indeed, countries in post conflict situations are vulnerable. Political leaders can be involved, and nowadays sanctions are not enough to stop this traffic. As a result, the human trafficking situation can even grow in a post-war situation. Thus, human trafficking raises the question of human security.

    SHIELDING NATIONAL SECURITY FROM HACKING

    About the committee

TOPIC N°1 SHIELDING NATIONAL SECURITY FROM HACKING Committee: The UNOCT (United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism) Ensuring cybersecurity is all the more important in countries where human rights are at risk. Presentation of the topic: In this period of exacerbated East-West conflict with unpredictable consequences, cyber-surveillance and eavesdropping systems are more active than ever. They serve the armed forces, the leaders, autocrats or not. And, in a second phase, they can also be misused for economic and industrial espionage. The goal is often the same: to listen, to communicate and infiltrate, under good and bad pretexts In 2016, the UN Human Rights Council urged all States to secure the Internet to protect human rights “…so that [the Internet] can continue to be a vibrant force that generates economic, social and cultural development.” Indeed, access to the Internet must be considered as a human right. Multiple human rights also depend on the Internet as freedom of expression on social media or access to information. In this post-pandemic period, working and learning remotely has become the norm. Ensuring cybersecurity is all the more important in countries where human rights are at risk. In these countries, human rights activists and civil society associations are subject to cyberattacks.
