About

"Legacy is created through your potential"

Spiru Model United Nations 2023 is the first edition of this project, a simulation of meetings at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The simulation will take place between March 24-26, 2023, at the "Spiru Haret Bucharest" National College, entirely in English, and will tackle various social, political, and economic issues. Our conference is created on the principle "by students, for students" and is aimed at high school students and university students who are passionate about diplomacy, economics, politics, and international relations, and who want to expand their knowledge and change society. Students from all over Romania and Europe will come to debate and learn the skills necessary for diplomacy during the 3 days of the conference.

Preventing Non-State Actors from Acquiring Weapons of Mass Destruction

    About the committee

🌍 The development of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) among non-state actors continues to pose a significant threat to world peace and security. Nonetheless, the United Nations member states remain split on how to handle this problem. Many of the technology, equipment, and raw materials needed to manufacture weapons of mass destruction and their delivery methods are accessible from legitimate manufacturers. 💣 Are materials for the manufacture of weapons too accessible to anyone? Could these weapons ever be accurately tracked and controlled?

    Addressing Refugee Associated Xenophobia

    About the committee

🤝 Many political actors worldwide have resorted to anti-refugee/anti-immigrant stances that promote fear and distrust of foreigners. While the UN is working for extensive reforms in the responsiveness of states to refugee situations, there still is a dissonance between the political positions and the UN's effort. The discriminating sentiments with which they face have profound implications for their social warfare and healthcare entitlements as they migrate to and settle in new host communities. 🫂 How can the international community put an end to this behavior? What can we do to guarantee that the refugees are no longer ostracised and discriminated against? How can each country find better ways to manage the refugee flow?

Assessing the Security Landscape of Central America

    About the committee

🕊 The region of Central America faces an ongoing crisis that initially began in the late 1970s, when major civil wars and communist revolutions erupted in many countries in Central America, causing it to become the world's most volatile region in terms of socioeconomic change. The situation in the region has been impacted by the interventions of the United Kingdom and the United States of America, since both held political and economic interests in Latin and Central America. But, these foreign interventions also supported a counterinsurgency war in El Salvador and directed a guerrilla insurgency in Nicaragua, leading to military tensions in the region. Several Latin American nations formed the Contadora Group to work for a resolution to the wars and conflicts in Central America, ending with the signing of the Esquipulas Peace Agreement, which eventually provided the framework for ending the civil wars in the region targeted. What can other countries do in order to have a constructive impact on the Security Landscape of the countries in Central America, without violating their sovereignty?

    About the committee

💵 We are thrilled to introduce the topic of this unique Committee, the first time it is done in the Romanian MUN community, the Economic Commission for Africa - Improving the Efficiency and Sustainability of Production in Africa! 💰 As such, you will have the chance to do something that isn’t very usual in MUNs, especially in economic committees: debate on a topic whose main actors are the African countries and African communities. Despite the incredible potential and natural environment, the continent has for these industries, the production rate in many countries remains well below the global average. How could nations develop a project plan to improve the continent’s infrastructure, irrigation systems, mining equipment, or harvesting techniques? Is it possible for the African economy and production to improve?

Certain Activities Carried Out by Nicaragua in the Border Area (Costa Rica v. Nicaragua)

    About the committee

⚖️ At the beginning of October 2010, the Nicaraguan government began operations to dredge 33 kilometers of the San Juan River, constructing a canal between the river and Laguna Los Portillos. On the 20th of October, the government of Costa Rica complained to the Nicaraguan authorities, claiming that their rights to their country’s sovereignty were violated, as Nicaraguan troops had entered Costa Rican territory. However, Nicaragua rejected all the allegations and claimed that, in fact, Costa Rica had invaded their territory. The Vice President of Nicaragua even stated that they “cannot invade (their) own territory”. Following that, only two days later, both states sent reinforcements to the border area on the island. As the conflict continued, on November 18th, 2010, the Republic of Costa Rica filed an Application at the International Court of Justice instituting proceedings against the Republic of Nicaragua.

    About the committee

🗡 Beginning with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and escalating rapidly into an international conflict of sizes never seen before, World War I represents one of the turning points in late modern history, depicting significant changes in warfare, alliances, and mentalities. It was fought between the Allied Powers, which included France, Russia, and the United Kingdom, and the Central Powers, which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. The war was characterized by trench warfare, in which soldiers on both sides were entrenched in long, deep ditches, and by the use of new technologies, such as tanks and chemical weapons. 📜 You are now offered the chance of rewriting history!
