Modern Slavery and the Exploitation of Refugees

    About the committee

Refugees are defined as individuals who have been forced to leave their home country to escape conflict, persecution, or natural disasters. As of 2024, there are currently 44 million refugees, with the majority being located in low and middle income countries. Oftentimes, refugees end up being subject to exploitation, get abused by their contractors, struggle because of language barriers, and get underrepresented as well as overlooked in politics of their host countries. This committee aims to investigate and reinforce the rights of refugees worldwide, and ensure their security from exploitation.

    About the committee

The Mexican Drug War (2006-present) is an asymmetric conflict between the Mexican government and intrastate drug cartels. The war started with the Mexican government intervening to dismantle drug related violence, however the intervention escalated into a power struggle between the two belligerents. Although primarily located in Mexico, the war has spilled over to neighbouring countries as well, and has spread throughout a large portion of Latin America. The primary objective of this committee will be to address the war, prevent further conflict, and safeguard the security of the region.

Bringing the CTBT into force: addressing non-signatory and non-ratifying states

    About the committee

Created on September 10th 1996, the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) bans all nuclear explosion tests on Earth both for civilian and military purposes. Ever since its creation, only 187 states ratified it, and only 178 states signed it. Although the CTBT globally establishes the norm for nuclear testing, it gets challenged by the lack of effective action taken to enforce its policies by signatories, and is inhibited by the lack of signatures from nuclear powers worldwide. This committee aims to gather more signatories for the treaty, and hold non-ratifying states accountable.

Progressive Realization in Global Health with the Case Study of NCDs (Non-Communicable Diseases)

    About the committee

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are illnesses that can not be transmitted from person to person. They account for 74% of global deaths, with 77% of deaths occurring in low-income and middle-income nations. Although there have been attempts at globally reducing the impact of NCDs, it is important to note their disproportionate effect on countries with vulnerable socioeconomic conditions. The aim of this committee is to further global understanding, prevention and management of NCDs with the focus on addressing disparities in healthcare access, improving public health initiatives and promoting sustainable strategies to mitigate this issue particularly in developing nations.

The Escalation of the Syrian Civil War

    About the committee

The Syrian Civil War (2011-present) is a violent conflict consisting of numerous belligerents including the Syrian government, insurgency groups, and foreign actors. The war has induced a humanitarian crisis in the region consisting of the loss of a myriad of lives, and the displacement of over 12 million people. The civil war has also been the cause of much of the Middle East's destabilisation, and has spilled over into surrounding territories as well. Despite efforts by the international community to stop the war, a lack of consensus on the plan of action has inhibited any attempts at a peaceful resolution. The primary objective of this committee is to discuss the recent developments in the war, and develop solutions to promote stability in the region.
