International Criminal Court (ICC) in Model UN

The International Criminal Court tries individuals, not states, for genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression. Created by the Rome Statute of 1998, it is based in The Hague and is not part of the UN. In Model UN the ICC usually runs as a trial, with delegates as prosecutors, defence counsel or judges.

ICC in Model UN: quick answers

How many delegates are in an ICC committee?

The ICC itself has 18 judges, and three of them sit as the Trial Chamber that hears a case. ICC sessions on mymun filled about 12 seats.

How is the ICC different from the ICJ?

The ICC tries individuals and has a prosecutor, while the ICJ hears cases between states and cannot try anyone. The ICJ is a principal organ of the UN, and the ICC is an independent court with its own treaty.

Is the ICC a good committee for beginners?

It is a hard first committee: the prosecution carries the burden of proof, and each charge must meet the Rome Statute's definition of the crime, which takes careful legal reading.
