Sustainable Development: The Future is Now

Asian International Model United Nations (AIMUN) is an annual conference hosted by the School of International Studies, Peking University, organized by Peking University Model United Nations Association. Since its inception in 2007, AIMUN has held 14 successful conferences and will be returning with its 15th edition in May 2023. As the largest and most influential collegiate international Model United Nations (MUN) conference in China, AIMUN provides a valuable communication platform for youths sharing a common interest in international affairs to discuss a wide range of hot-button issues with delegates from diverse cultural backgrounds. In this process, we hope that delegates will be able to embrace the diversity of viewpoints and at the same time showcase the unique perspectives of Asia. In the coming year, AIMUN will remain committed to our goals, building on the good work of our predecessors and seeking to open up new prospects through innovation.

This year, AIMUN will be held onsite in Beijing in May 2023. The theme of AIMUN 2023 will be “Sustainable Development: The Future is Now”,  where a total of 8 committees will be convened. The conference will be based mainly on simulations of international multilateral conferences and negotiations, with esteemed leaders, scholars, and professionals from international organizations joining in the sessions to share their opinions with our delegates and engage in meaningful dialogues.

In today's world, sustainable development has been extended to all aspects of a nation's survival and development. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are also part of China's 14th Five-Year Plan, which emphasizes high-quality green development. In response to the social and environmental challenges that have emerged after decades of rapid growth, and in view of China's large population and growing international influence, it is vital for China to play a key role in the global journey towards sustainable development by actively pursuing relevant initiatives and policies. As such, while remaining roots in China, AIMUN 2023 will keep eyes on the world, focusing on the aforementioned areas and aiming to encourage MUNers to pay attention to current global issues and actively contribute their wisdom and strength to sustainable development.

Striving for a Sustainable Future Amid Global Disorder

    About the committee

The Ambassador Program was initiated in 2013, and has been functioning as the flagship committee of AIMUN ever since. In this committee, delegates will conduct discussions regarding the theme of AIMUN 2023, in the position of ambassador of respective countries. The ambassador is usually the head of United Nations delegations, and the permanent representative of his or her home country to the United Nations. Therefore, it is duty-bound for the ambassadors to consult, communicate, and coordinate with all the delegates of their country for coordinated statements and following actions, and at the same time connect other committees in this conference as organized. In addition, ambassadors in AIMUN 2023 will also have the opportunity to play a leading role in their delegation in the joint crisis with other committees including UNGA, UNEP, and HRC. The idea of sustainable development has come to occupy a central place in seeking solutions to the contradiction between environmental issues and economic development. With limited resources, fragile natural systems, respective interests and mutual profits, achieving sustainable goals requires global integration. A separate, fragmented and beggar-thy-neighbor international community serves no individual well. However, anti-globalization has been on the rise these years, while the pandemic and geopolitical conflicts have added urgency, shaping the integrated world towards localization and regionalization. This poses great challenges for sustainability. In AIMUN 2023, delegates of the Ambassador Program will collaborate with other committees in navigating sustainable development problems. Ambassadors will work on issues such as trade protectionism and economic nationalism, supply chain challenges, food system and agricultural sustainability, natural resources and renewable energy, trust deficit and political instability, developing solutions to rebuild a global order of mutual understanding and mutual trust.

    About the committee

Are you interested in anti-terrorism and non-proliferation? Do you have a yearning for peacekeeping work? Join us to experience how Security Council works to keep global security in AIMUN 2023! 1. Committee Introduction The Security Council has primary responsibility, under the UN Charter, for the maintenance of international peace and security. It has 15 Members (5 permanent and 10 non-permanent members), each entitled to one vote. Under the Charter, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions. The Security Council takes the lead in determining the existence of a threat to the peace or an act of aggression. It calls upon the parties to a dispute to settle it by peaceful means and recommends methods of adjustment or terms of a settlement. Under certain circumstances, the Security Council could resort to the use of sanctions or even force to maintain or restore international peace and security. 2. Topic Introduction The topic of UNSC is Preventing Terrorists From Acquiring Weapons of Mass Destruction. Terrorism and weapons of mass destruction are the major challenges to regional and global security. The linkage between the fight against terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear, chemical, and radiological terrorism, has raised concerns about enhancing internal and cross-broader regulations in production, use, storage, or transport, and encouraging fair and complete disarmament. While thoroughly eliminating terrorism or prohibiting states from the research and development of weapons is impossible in the short term, there is a paramount need to engage relevant stakeholders, facilitate a cooperative mechanism, and prevent the exacerbation of the status quo. The UNSC, at its birth, was designed for such missions. The divergence in countries’ definitions of terrorist organizations and worries concerned with national interest during the disarmament of mass destruction weapons have persisted in settlement of the issue, leaving it difficult to take the first step. Through research and analysis, combining prompt-action promises with uncompromising country stances, delegates are expected to facilitate the dispute settlement of the issue, taking the joint career to a higher stage. 3. Eligibility Your interest and passion in the topic we are addressing in UNSC this year, Preventing Terrorists From Acquiring Weapons of Mass Destruction, is all that we are expecting. Try yourself out for insightful analysis and intense discussion here at UNSC, and leave your profound impact!

Preventing Famine and Fighting Food Insecurity

    About the committee

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) holds its annual regular session as a forum for multilateral negotiation to address the full spectrum of international issues. The Assembly occupies a central position in terms of policy-making and standard-setting, being established as the chief deliberative and representative organ of the United Nations. This year in AIMUN General Assembly, delegates will be met with the problem of food security under the theme of sustainable development. Rising global food crisis calls upon quick reaction and urgent support from the international community as it directly undermines one of the most fundamental human rights—the right to be free from hunger and malnutrition. Global food prices remain high due to ongoing wars, regional conflicts, energy costs, weather events, etc. In particular, a food shortage is likely to disproportionately impact marginalized groups coming from poor households as well as developing economies that rely heavily on agricultural export. Reduced availability or affordability of food compromises health, education, maternal well-being, and many other social indicators, as well as the capacity to earn a living. Even developed countries are not immune to the negative consequences of the crisis—rising food prices and potential famine have added to inflationary or poverty tensions already being felt. Since the crisis has its far-reaching and multi-faceted repercussions for all countries, it is incumbent upon the international community to promote food security and prevent hunger and starvation. Hopefully, this conference will serve as a platform to engage all voices and generate lively conversations. Delegates are encouraged to respond to the motion decisively and comprehensively, reaching a consensus through negotiations and fruitful discussions.

    About the committee

Over the last decade, green finance has grown over hundred-fold worldwide. Increasingly so, environmental implications have become an important aspect of investment. Owing to its potential to meet the need for both development and environmental protection, the UN has identified green finance as an essential tool in delivering its SDGs. While green finance is pivotal, it is also a relatively nascent development. Therefore, on the basis of revisiting and reevaluating the rise of green finance, this committee seeks to enhance existing policy incentives and regulatory frameworks of financial markets at each level, to incite positive change from both public and private investors.

    About the committee

    Economic Security for Displaced Women

    About the committee

Despite existing international law and global initiatives, it is an undeniable fact that millions of forcibly displaced refugee women are still unable to gain access to necessary humanitarian assistance and equal treatment. Displaced women are often deprived of fair employment opportunities due to gender preferences for males in blue collared jobs. Tackling loopholes within existing conventions to protect the rights of this vulnerable group not only requires a thorough understanding of the distinct responsibilities of displaced women but also the stigma surrounding them. Through this conference, innovative solutions that address the interest of relevant stakeholders will be sought so as to improve displaced women’s participation in the workforce and promote the socioeconomic integration of the refugee communities.
